07 How many classes are there for hazardous materials? +

The U.S. Department of Transportation groups hazardous materials into nine hazard classes: explosives, gases, flammable and combustible liquids, flammable solids, oxidizers and organic peroxides, toxic and infectious substances, radioactive materials, corrosive materials, and miscellaneous hazardous materials. Biological hazards can fall within areas such as infectious substances. The current 49 CFR §173.2 hazard-class table lists the nine classes and their divisions.

08 How do you identify hazardous material? +

Hazardous materials can be identified by checking the product identifier, hazard pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, precautionary statements, and the material’s SDS. In transportation, additional identifiers can include the proper shipping name, UN/NA number, hazard class, labels, placards, and shipping papers. These are core parts of effective hazard identification techniques. OSHA’s current hazard communication requirements specify how workplace chemical hazards must be classified and communicated.

09 What color is used to identify hazardous material? +

There is no single universal color used to identify every hazardous material. Under OSHA’s GHS labeling system, hazard pictograms use a black symbol on a white background inside a red diamond-shaped frame, while transportation placard colors vary depending on the hazard class.
